Charm of Finches, an Australian sister duo, has captured the hearts of music lovers with their intricate folk-pop sound that is both graceful and darkly bewitching. Comprising of sisters Mabel and Ivy Windred-Wornes, their music is characterised by seamless blood harmonies that effortlessly traverse the realms of melancholy and wonder.
In 2021, Charm of Finches released their third full-length album, «Wonderful Oblivion», through the esteemed New York-based label Antifragile Music. The album received critical acclaim, further solidifying the duo’s reputation as exceptional musicians. Their talent has taken them on extensive tours through the UK, Europe, and Canada in 2022 and 2023, captivating audiences with their mesmerising performances.
Charm of Finches‘ exceptional artistry has not gone unnoticed, as they have been the recipients of several prestigious awards. In 2022, they were honoured with the Australian Folk Music Awards for Best Folk Album. Additionally, they won the Music Victoria Best Contemporary Folk Act in 2021. Their music has also been nominated twice for the highly regarded Australian Music Prize, a testament to the profound impact they have made in the music industry.
In February 2023, the sisters embarked on a creative journey to rural Nova Scotia, where they collaborated with acclaimed Canadian producer Daniel Ledwell (known for his work with artists like Jenn Grant and Oh Pep!). Inspired by the frozen beauty of the landscape and their transient life on the road, Charm of Finches crafted their fourth studio album, “Marlinchen in the Snow.”
The album draws influence from the haunting Grimm’s fairy tale, «The Juniper Tree». Mabel shares that the tale resonated deeply with them, stating, «It’s a haunting tale of how Marlinchen discovers the death of her stepbrother at the hands of her mother. This found its way into one of our songs. There’s lots of symbolism in the story, but really, it’s about female strength and intuition – overcoming obstacles led by your inner voice – a theme throughout the album».
Charm of Finches‘ captivating music has garnered widespread acclaim, earning them a place on Spotify’s coveted playlists such as Lush Ethereal, Infinite Acoustic, Noir, and Fresh Folk, among others. Their unique sound and lyrical depth have resonated with listeners, solidifying their position as one of the most exciting acts in the folk-pop genre.
As their musical journey continues, Charm of Finches is set to embark on a UK tour from May to August, captivating audiences with their enchanting performances. They also have additional dates planned in Canada, further expanding their reach and sharing their soul-stirring music with fans around the world.
In conclusion, Charm of Finches, the Australian sister duo, has captivated audiences with their intricate and bewitching folk-pop sound. Their music, characterised by seamless blood harmonies, effortlessly traverses melancholy and wonder. With their critically acclaimed albums and captivating live performances, Charm of Finches continues to leave an indelible mark on the music industry, enchanting listeners with their graceful and evocative melodies.
