Just in time to relieve those post-Pride doldrums, Norwegian queer indie pop artist Magnus Riise has released the video for his latest single, «My Heart Can Beat Again». This effervescent queer love song, written with Tim Rosser and Charlie Sohne (recipients of the Jonathan Larson Grant and Kleban Award), shines a light on the strength of solidarity within the LGBTQ+ community.
The video tells the story of Aiden (Leighla Rene), who notices the isolation experienced by a neighbourhood queer kid, Riley (Liam Zalben). In a heartfelt gesture, Aiden sends her parents’ old camcorder around the world to collect messages of support from the LGBTQ+ community. The video compilation aims to show Riley—and queer kids everywhere—the vast and supportive family they belong to.
Over 50 LGBTQ+ individuals contributed messages for the video’s main character. These include notable figures like Soman Chainani (author, «The School for Good and Evil»), Jeff Hiller («Somebody, Somewhere»), Noah J. Ricketts («Gatsby», «Fellow Travelers»), Barrett Foa («NCIS: LA»), Russell Harvard («There Will Be Blood»), Kitty Scott-Claus («RuPaul’s Drag Race UK»), Sandra Mae Frank («New Amsterdam»), and Jordan Doww (Teen Choice Award nominee), among others. Each message is a beacon of hope and resilience, reinforcing the video’s powerful message.
When Riley views the video, he is moved by the overwhelming support and love from the broader LGBTQ+ community. It strengthens his resolve and helps him realise the size of his queer family, fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment. «My Heart Can Beat Again» is more than just a song; it’s a testament to the enduring strength and solidarity of the LGBTQ+ community.
Magnus Riise’s latest release is a timely reminder of the power of unity and support within the LGBTQ+ community. «My Heart Can Beat Again» not only offers an uplifting tune but also delivers a profound message of love and solidarity. As we celebrate this new release, let us remember the importance of standing together and supporting one another, especially during challenging times.
