Norwegian Eurovision winner Alexander Rybak has recently found himself at the center of a significant controversy following his accidental revelation of voting for the Christian Democratic Party (Kristelig Folkeparti – KRF) during the 2025 elections. This political party is known for its strong opposition to LGBTQ rights, raising concerns among Rybak’s fanbase, particularly his LGBTQ and Eurovision supporters.
The posts on Rybak’s social media quickly filled with criticism from fans who felt betrayed by his political choice. Various comments reflected a collective disappointment, such as, «For an artist who lives on the Eurovision audience year after year—with a large number of queer fans—it’s quite special to shoot himself in the foot». The backlash highlighted issues surrounding artists and their political affiliations, especially when they are seen as public figures in the LGBTQ community.
Rybak’s political stance may impact his career, particularly given that Eurovision appeals broadly to a diverse audience. The anger from his fans suggests that the consequences of his voting choice could resonate beyond social media, potentially influencing his public image and future engagements. Rybak’s decision to support KRF, an organization led by a new right-wing Christian fundamentalist leadership, has re-ignited discussions about the responsibilities of artists towards their fans and the communities they represent.
