Twin Cities singer‑songwriter Paul David has unleashed «Unencumbered Stardust», a cosmic pop single with a wicked sense of humour and a surprisingly emotional core. It’s a track that turns mortality, metaphysics and one very memorable egg‑salad sandwich into a shimmering summer anthem built for blasting with the windows down. Blending existential wonder with bright, infectious pop energy, the Minnesota artist delivers a song that’s as philosophical as it is playful, proving that even the biggest questions about life and death can come wrapped in a hook you’ll be humming for days.
The single began with a meme, a joke about atoms coming undone, drifting across galaxies as stardust and eventually landing on someone’s sandwich. What could have been a throwaway gag instead sparked something profound. For Paul David, the humour masked a deeper truth: that death might not be an ending at all, but a return to something vast, eternal and strangely beautiful. That idea hit even harder after the loss of his soulmate in a car accident in the early 1990s. He recalls standing in an industrial kitchen making egg salad and thinking, «You are off exploring the universe and I am here making egg salad». From that moment, the sandwich in the meme was never generic, it was always egg salad, forever tied to grief, memory and love.
Musically, «Unencumbered Stardust» is a burst of shimmering pop with a philosophical heart. Paul David draws on the golden glow of Harry Styles’ Golden, the timeless pulse of Tears for Fears’ «Everybody Wants to Rule the World», and even slips an Afro‑Cuban bembé groove into the bridge to evoke celebration, spirit and the leap into the non‑physical. The result is a track that feels joyful and expansive even as it wrestles with the mysteries of existence, turning cosmic questions into something you can dance to.
The song’s roots stretch back to an earlier classical work, «Stardust Once Again», written for SATB choir and RAV Vast handpans in collaboration with Twin Cities ensemble imPulse. While completing that piece, Paul David sketched an early pop version that he rediscovered in the summer of 2025 and developed into the single we hear today. Longtime collaborator Alex Maiers adds guitar, shaping the final sound with the musicality that has defined their partnership.
For the official video, Paul David dove headfirst into AI technology, determined to understand it as an artist rather than an observer. The result is a surreal, colourful journey through distant worlds, cosmic dance floors and, of course, an egg‑salad sandwich landing squarely on the plate of his husband, Tom. It’s chaotic, charming and perfectly in tune with the song’s blend of humour and heart.
With its mix of cosmic imagination, emotional truth and cheeky irreverence, Unencumbered Stardust invites listeners to smile, reflect and feel a little more connected to the universe. It’s philosophical pop with a pulse, playful, poignant and just unhinged enough to remind us that being alive is strange, beautiful and fleeting, and that the journey might not end when we think it does.
Paul David is a Twin Cities‑based singer‑songwriter and multi‑instrumentalist whose work bridges pop, spirituality and bold creative storytelling. His music explores transformation, consciousness and the human experience with sincerity and wit. Beyond music, he is a channel for higher consciousness, a respected tarot reader, author of the forthcoming 42 Stories of Life, the Universe, …Everything! and Director of Employee Development for a food service management company. He lives in Plymouth, Minnesota, with his husband, Tom.
