Just Shy & Boyd Kelly Are Soundtracking Your Pre-Drinks With The Sparkling «Mirrorball»

Melbourne musicians Just Shy and Boyd Kelly are set to take over dancefloors with their new collaboration, «Mirrorball», which is a glamorous ode to the joy of partying.

The track, out now, captures the anticipation of heading out for a big night. It also serves as the perfect prelude to the music you’ll be hearing played during sweaty DJ sets at your favourite nightclub.

If you’re a fan of Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s «Murder On The Dancefloor», Madison Avenue’s «Don’t Call Me Baby», or partaking in champagne and poppers while you’re out and about, then you’ll enjoy «Mirrorball». The pair hope the track will become a staple of girls’ and gay’s pre-drinks playlists worldwide, and thanks to the track’s homage to huge dance pop moments of the 2000s, it’s sure to sit neatly amongst your other go-to tracks for when you’re amping yourself up for a night of debauchery.

Speaking about «Mirrorball», the pair says they’re excited for the track to inspire countless parties. Just Shy says, «I wrote the topline mid-lockdown as an ode to the crazy, spontaneous nights out I was missing so terribly at the time, and the sparkle of flirtation they’d sometimes bring. Now that partying is back on the agenda (at least in Australia) I can’t wait to bring the track to life!»

Boyd Kelly echoes these thoughts, saying, «With the production I was heavily inspired by early 2000s dance pop, where offbeat samples and kitsch vocals were smashed together. In this case, the sample is taken from a 70s Italian pop star, run through French house filter sweeps, and is laid out on a paradise garage beat. Like the protagonist of the song, the production is upfront, fun, and sharp».

The artwork for the track is eye-catching, and it was created in collaboration with a friend of the pair, Olly (aka Hoff The Wall). He produces striking designs based off songs he loves, and the pink and purple colour palette he’s chosen for the cover art embodies the sense of late-night flirtation that Just Shy and Boyd Kelly channel in «Mirrorball».

The pair will be playing the song live as part of Hairyfest on August 14^th, at the Yorkshire Stingo. The party’s been organised by local fashion label Hairy Originals, with 100% of the proceeds going to Black Rainbow, an organisation investing in the future of the Indigenous LGBTQIA+ community.
