Hailing from Chicago, IL, the Weekend Run Club is a queer majority indie band that has recently released their highly anticipated album, «Liminal Space Race». Comprised of five talented musicians, the band’s music delves into themes of identity, coming of age, and interpersonal relationships, drawing inspiration from a diverse range of genres including rock, alternative, power pop, punk, and emo.
«Liminal Space Race» takes listeners on a sonic journey that combines poignant, self-revealing lyrics, danceable rhythms, and captivating guitar licks. The album speaks to the introspective alien, the extroverted party jammers, and everyone in between. It explores the unsettling realisation that some relationships are not meant to last, while also capturing the festive warmth of a fancy gay dinner party where nobody quite fits in.
One of the standout tracks on the album is «Prince of Wales», which features synth chords, spontaneous guitar parts, and bass lines that were playfully experimented with by Mitchell, one of the band members. The lyrics at the end of the song, «I’m a loser in love…», were taken from an old unreleased song, showcasing the band’s love for revamping old material and creating something new.
The genre-blending nature of the Weekend Run Club’s music is evident in «Liminal Space Race», with elements of alternative, indie-rock, power pop, and pop rock coming together to create a groovy and infectious tune. Mitchell, reflecting on the inspiration behind «Prince of Wales», shares that the track was influenced by a party they attended and a character from the Sondheim show, «A Little Night Music». The song explores the fear of settling down and losing freedom, a common theme in queer culture.
«Liminal Space Race» is an album that covers a wide range of moods, encouraging listeners to embrace and feel all emotions, no matter how challenging they may be. It effortlessly blends upbeat, danceable themes with moments of quiet reflection, creating a dynamic listening experience that caters to a diverse audience.
The album showcases a fusion of genres, including indie, indie rock, indie pop, rock, alternative rock, pop rock, dance rock, alternative, and power pop. The tracks feature a combination of guitar, bass, drums, synths, and vocals, resulting in exceptional and atmospheric earworms that linger in the mind long after the music has stopped.
At the start of 2022, the Weekend Run Club experienced a significant roster shift, with Mitchell assuming primary songwriter duties and a restructuring of the composition process. This change in identity was initially challenging for the surviving members, Mitchell and Ryan. However, fueled by the time lost during the pandemic and the motivation to redefine their sound, the band was determined to release something new.
The addition of new members to the band brought fresh perspectives and a supportive environment for Mitchell’s new ideas. This collaboration resulted in songs that exude a unique confidence and flare that is irreplaceable. While the band has evolved, one aspect that remains constant is their appreciation for a diverse range of genres, as they seamlessly blend rock elements with the sweet, indie guitars that characterized their early sound.
«Liminal Space Race» captures the band’s fear of making this record, but instead of solely focusing on that fear, they channeled it into writing nine songs that explore fear and uncertainty in various aspects of life. The album reflects on the universal experience of coming of age, addressing the frenetic paradigm shifts that occur during adolescence and early adulthood. It acknowledges the truth that the process of coming out is ongoing, especially for queer individuals, and that we never truly stop coming out.
With «Liminal Space Race», the Weekend Run Club has crafted an album that is both introspective and relatable, offering a musical journey that resonates with listeners from all walks of life. It is a testament to their growth as artists and their commitment to creating music that speaks to the human experience.
