In a recent interview with Sveriges Radio‘s Carolina Norén, Mr. Jean Philip De Tender, the EBU’s Media Director, provided comprehensive insights into the new Eurovision Song Contest rules. These changes come on the heels of incidents that occurred during Eurovision 2024 in Malmö. The EBU’s independent inquiry has led to significant updates aimed at improving the contest’s operations and oversight.
One of the key points Mr. De Tender confirmed was that Martin Österdahl will continue to serve as the Executive Supervisor of the Eurovision Song Contest. Despite the various challenges and controversies, Mr. Österdahl remains a trusted figure in managing the competition. However, some of his responsibilities will now be distributed among newly created roles to better handle the increasing demands of the position. Still it seems like EBU didn’t learn anything, only one punished are Joost Klein and the Netherlands – and that punishment was extremely hash !
Mr. De Tender explained that the decision to divide the executive responsibilities stems from the growing complexity of the contest. He stated, «There’s now so much responsibility with the executive supervisor, new responsibilities which have come to be added to the task, that we thought it’s better that we divide the roles and the responsibilities». This strategic move is aimed at ensuring a smoother operation and more effective management of the contest.
In the wake of the Eurovision 2024 incidents, questions have been raised about the EBU’s handling of certain situations, including the involvement of Joost Klein and actions by participating countries like Israel. Mr. De Tender’s interview did not directly address these controversies, but the changes in the rules and the division of responsibilities suggest a proactive approach by the EBU to learn from past events and enhance the integrity of the Eurovision Song Contest.
