In light of recent events and ongoing discussions at the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), RTÉ has made a significant statement regarding Ireland’s potential participation in the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest. At the EBU’s general assembly in July, several members expressed concerns over Israel’s involvement, prompting RTÉ to evaluate its response diligently.
RTÉ has emphasised its position unequivocally: Ireland will not participate in the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest if Israel continues to be a participant. This decision underlines RTÉ’s commitment to social responsibility and reflects on the humanitarian crisis currently unfolding in Gaza. The broadcaster’s statement noted the distressing loss of lives and the situation of journalists on the ground as pivotal factors influencing their stance.
Furthermore, RTÉ expressed gratitude to the EBU for their consultation efforts following the assembly, allowing members the option to withdraw from participation without penalty until December. The broadcaster believes that remaining part of an event that includes Israel would be unconscionable amidst the backdrop of violence and suffering in Gaza. The leadership’s resolve signals a growing awareness in broadcasting circles about the ethical implications of international events.
As the discussions develop, RTÉ’s audience awaits further clarity on Europe’s broadcasting framework, anticipating the decisions that will shape the future of the Eurovision Song Contest.
