SVT’s Melodifestivalen, one of the most anticipated music competitions in Sweden, is undergoing significant changes for its 2025 edition. The final qualifiers have been the subject of criticism, prompting a revision of the format. This blog post covers the details of the new regulations set to take effect in Melodifestivalen 2025.
Last year’s introduction of the «finalkvalet», a variant of second chance and semi-finals, did not sit well with audiences. As a result, Melodifestivalen project manager Anders Wistbacka announced on SVT’s Morgonstudion that the format will see substantial changes in 2025. The primary adjustment is that only one entry from each sub-competition will go to the final qualifier, reducing the number of competing entries from ten to five.
In the new format, the artists reaching the final qualifier will be present in the arena but will not perform live. Instead, replay videos of their performances will be shown. The event will still be an extension of competition 5, but with a twist: one entry will proceed directly to the final based on the highest votes received during their sub-competition.
The viewers will then vote on the remaining four entries. The final spot for the grand finale will be awarded to the entry accumulating the highest total votes from both the sub-competitions and the final qualifier.
Another interesting change for Melodifestivalen 2025 is the new song release schedule. All entries in each sub-competition will be released the day before the competition, a significant shift from previous years. Previously, only the non-finalist songs were released for listening post-competition, while finalists’ songs were withheld until after the final heat.
The updated regulations are aimed at addressing criticisms and enhancing the competition’s appeal, offering a more streamlined and engaging experience for both participants and viewers. It will be intriguing to see how these changes affect the dynamics of SVT’s Melodifestivalen 2025.
Melodifestivalen are Sweden’s hunt for their Eurovision entry – the winner of Melodifestivalen will be representing Sweden in Eurovision.
