Nian Tong, the London-based indie-pop newcomer with a cult following already forming around him, is gearing up to shake the capital’s music scene with his new EP «Gradually» — and it’s the kind of emotionally charged, nostalgia‑tinted project that has tastemakers whispering his name.
The rising singer‑songwriter, producer, and composer has carved out a sound that feels instantly recognisable: dreamy indie pop laced with 60s and 70s melodic sweetness, warm harmonies, and a quietly devastating emotional core. His music may shimmer with charm, but beneath the surface sits a raw honesty about love, longing, and the strange disconnection of modern relationships.
What makes Nian’s story even more compelling is how reluctantly he stepped into the spotlight. He spent years writing and producing for other artists, only discovering his own voice when he began penning lyrics that felt too personal to hand off. During the pandemic he trained his vocals in private, eventually releasing his debut EP in 2023. A move to London later that year — and immersion in the city’s buzzing live scene — transformed him from behind‑the‑scenes craftsman to full‑fledged frontman.
Now comes Gradually, a four‑track emotional journey shaped by a romance that never quite became real. Written during his first year in London, the EP captures the sting of being ghosted, the confusion of mixed signals, and the slow, uneven process of letting go. It’s intimate, relatable, and painfully modern.
The opener, What’s On Your Mind, blends hip‑hop‑inspired beats with string quartet flourishes, mellotron, and a doo‑wop‑style piano line, a playful yet bittersweet sound that mirrors the early hope and uncertainty of a new connection. Then comes I Shouldn’t Have Talked to You, a stark piano ballad born from an impulsive visit to the person who disappeared from his life. It’s tender, frustrated, and brutally self-aware, capturing the moment you realise someone can’t meet you where you are.
The title track, Gradually, marks the emotional shift. Acoustic guitar, layered synths, and a steady rhythm section build a sense of thoughts looping and fading, echoing Nian’s own reflection: «you are gradually fading in the back of my head». It’s the sound of moving on — not suddenly, but slowly, unevenly, and honestly.
Closing track «Whatever You Do» brings a burst of light. With a Motown‑inspired melody reimagined through modern synth production, it radiates cautious optimism. It’s the feeling of stepping into something new while still carrying the softness of what came before.
Produced entirely by Nian, the EP shows a subtle evolution in his sound. He’s moved away from the fuller live arrangements of his earlier work, leaning instead into a lighter, more contemporary palette shaped by samples and synths — without losing the retro melodic richness that defines him. Contributions from musicians across the U.S, Mexico, and Spain, plus mixing from Grammy‑winning engineer Darrell Thorp, give the project a global polish without sacrificing intimacy.
Before launching his own artist career, Nian had already built an impressive résumé: collaborations with major Chinese artists like Karencic, ICE, and Kenji Wu; orchestrations for the National Theatre of China; and original stage works performed in the UK and Japan. His music has racked up more than 7 million streams in China, with his track «I Do Love You» going viral on Chinese TikTok.
With Gradually poised to introduce him to a wider international audience, Nian Tong is emerging as one of indie pop’s most distinctive new voices — tender, meticulous, and quietly irresistible.
