Swedish Melodifestivalen according to me ! – Semi-final 2 2025

By Ephram St. Cloud12/02/2025 Article 68 Views

SVT guarantee a star-studded lineup of beloved artists and 17 debutants, all vying for the Songbird title and a chance to represent Sweden in Eurovision this May.

Semi-final 2 – Gothenburg, 8 February 2025

1. «Funniest Thing» – Nomi Tales

Origin: Adam Breitholtz, Herman Gardarfve, Jacob Lundahl, Nomi Bontegard, Simon Weidersjö

The song delves into the concept of the inner critic, exploring themes of mockery and the tension that arises when one desires independence while simultaneously battling the harsh, often critical voices—whether they originate from within oneself or are external influences—that express sentiments of inadequacy and feelings of not being good enough. Although the pop song addresses these complex emotions and struggles with a compelling narrative, it ultimately didn’t make it to the final cut and was not one of my personal favourites in the overall selection.

2. «Don Juan» – Schlagerz

Origin: Anna Engh, Mikael Karlsson

This song truly embodies the essence of a classic schlager tune, characterized by its catchy melodies and heartfelt lyrics. Unfortunately, it did not manage to reach the final stage of Melodifestivalen, which was quite disappointing for its fans. Nevertheless, it is sure to find a place in the playlists of schlager music enthusiasts across Scandinavia. Additionally, it will continue to resonate in the homeland of schlager music, Germany, where it will be appreciated by many long after the competition has ended.

3. «Show Me What Love Is» – Erik Segerstedt

Origin: Erik Segerstedt, Mattias Andréasson, Pontus Söderman

I had high expectations for Erik Segerstedt‘s contribution to the competition, and I am pleased to say that he did not disappoint at all. He impressively went straight to the final of Melodifestivalen, showcasing his talent and charisma. The song he performed, which is a powerful and emotional pop ballad, captured the audience’s attention and hearts. This marks a significant milestone as it is his first entry as a solo artist in Melodifestivalen, making it an exciting moment not just for him, but also for his fans who have eagerly awaited this solo venture.

4. «On and On and On» – Klara Hammarström

Origin: Dino Medanhodzic, Jimmy Jansson, Klara Hammarström, Moa ”Cazzi Opeia” Carlebecker, Peter Boström, Thomas G:son

«On and On and On» is an uplifting pop anthem brimming with energy and positivity. This song radiates an emotional vibe with its upbeat tempo, creating a feeling that is almost cinematic in nature. The heart of the song revolves around the powerful themes of self-belief, self-love, and embracing one’s true identity. It carries an empowering fighting spirit that encourages listeners to push through challenges and remain true to themselves. This particular track quickly became my second favorite, and it certainly did not disappoint; it went straight to the final of Melodifestivalen on 8 March, 2025, proving its appeal and resonating with many fans who appreciate its message and vitality.

5. «The Heart of a Swedish Cowboy» – Fredrik Lundman

Origin: Erik Bernholm, Maja Francis, Thomas G:son

«The Heart of a Swedish Cowboy» is a captivating song that delves into the exhilarating experiences of life, highlighting the moments when everything seems to be at its peak and, conversely, when it feels like it’s all falling apart. It speaks to the bravery required to confront challenges head-on and emphasises the importance of discovering inner strength to rise again after setbacks. Life is portrayed as a winding journey with an unpredictable destination, where the path ahead is often unclear. At times, it requires immense courage to take that next step and continue moving forward, even when faced with uncertainty. Unfortunately, this particular song did not reach the final stages of recognition; it remained somewhat under the radar and, in my opinion.

6. «Salute» – Kaliffa

Origin: Anderz Wrethov, Jakob «Big Brain» Malmlöf, Jimmy «Joker» Thörnfeldt, Kaliffa Karlsson, Robert Skowronski

The song revolves around the theme of progressing through life and having faith in oneself, even when faced with setbacks and obstacles. It emphasises that it doesn’t matter who you are or what your background may be; everyone has the opportunity to take part in this uplifting journey. The message is one filled with love and joy, celebrating the beauty and preciousness of life itself. This feel-good anthem is presented as a catchy pop tune that resonates with a wide audience, and it truly deserves its moment in the spotlight as it has achieved a well-earned second chance in Melodifestivalen. Overall, the song invites listeners to embrace their uniqueness while encouraging a sense of unity and support, making it an inspiring soundtrack for anyone looking to move forward and overcome challenges.

The third semi-final is scheduled to be broadcast on Saturday, the 15 of February, via SVT, starting at 20.00. Be sure to tune in for this exciting event!
